As many of you know, MyChelle has embarked on a campaign to rescue foals from the Premarin industry (Premarin stands for Pregnant Mare Urine and is a hormone replacement drug). We have been committed to saving these foals and using our financial resources to spread the word about the animal abuse associated with that industry. In addition, we have been educating women about the dangers of excess hormones. We have spent thousands of dollars shedding much needed light on a drug that has been shown to cause cancer but was still prescribed so frequently.
In response to the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study released in 2002, strict warnings were placed on Premarin® and the drugs associated with its pharmaceutical active ingredients such as Prempro®. Because of the WHI and the broad media attention it received, sales of the drug have dropped dramatically.
Breaking news from the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Harbor UCLA Medical Center presented at the December 2006 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in Houston has linked the reduced usage of hormone therapy with a steep decline in breast cancer cases. Researchers noted the most significant decline of breast cancer diagnosis in women age 50 to 69 in a one-year period coinciding with the considerable reduction in hormone therapy use. According to Associate Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital Francine Grodstein, ScD, “…it is not news that HT [hormone therapy] increases the risk of breast cancer.” Researchers agree that this new information provides even more scientific data as to that direct connection.
We agree with the researchers—it is not a coincidence that there has been a significant decline in breast cancer cases following the dramatically reduced usage of hormone therapy drugs. For those of us who have been determined and outspoken in our beliefs about these drugs and that industry, we feel some vindication. Our hope is that this new information gets broad attention so women throughout the United States think twice before agreeing to use this hormone replacement drug. There are alternatives to these drugs and those alternatives should be seriously explored with conviction by both healthcare professionals and patients.
